CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Cameroon, situated in Central Africa, has a multifaceted political environment marked by a wide variety of political groups. Since achieving independence from colonial authority in 1960, Cameroon has seen a sequence of political revolutions characterised by changes in power dynamics, transformations in governance structures, and socio-political difficulties (Omoniyi, 2020). Political parties have had a substantial impact in shaping the country's governance system over this trip.
Comprehending the function of political parties in Cameroon's government is crucial for understanding the dynamics of its political system. Political parties play a vital role as middlemen between the government and the public by expressing interests, creating policies, and rallying support. The impact of political parties on governance results in Cameroon is still a topic of discussion and research (Altman, 2019). Cameroon's political development history offers important insights into the formation of its party system. The political landscape in Cameroon has shifted from the CPDM's dominance under President Paul Biya to the rise of opposition parties pushing for political pluralism and democratic changes, mirroring the country's socio-political development (Basedau, 2019).
Cameroon's government system faces issues including corruption, authoritarianism, ethnic rifts, and socio-economic disparities. These difficulties overlap with the actions and impact of political parties, influencing governance dynamics in many ways. It is essential to comprehend how political parties address these difficulties and impact government to evaluate the potential for democratic stability and sustainable development in Cameroon (Bland, 2020).
Political science theoretical frameworks such as party systems theory, democratic governance, and institutional analysis provide methods for analysing how political parties influence governance results. Researchers may uncover how political parties impact government in Cameroon by examining party beliefs, organisational structures, election tactics, and interactions with state institutions.
Comparative studies of different countries with comparable political situations may provide useful insights into the function of political parties in government. Researchers may analyse Cameroon's experiences alongside those of other African states or worldwide case studies to uncover patterns, trends, and best practices that might improve government effectiveness and democratic accountability (Brancati, 2016). Studying the impact of political parties on Cameroon's governance is crucial for comprehending the country's political landscape, tackling governance issues, and promoting democratic changes. Researchers may enhance their knowledge of the intricate connection between political parties and governance results in Cameroon by using multidisciplinary methods, theoretical frameworks, and empirical data. Therefore, the study investigate the role of political parties in shaping Cameroon's governance.
1.2 Statement of the problem
Cameroon, like to other countries, functions within an intricate political environment where political parties have a crucial impact on developing governance systems and policies. The level of influence exerted by political parties in Cameroon's administration is not well recognised and investigated (Deschouwer, 2017). Current research provides little details on the many ways in which political parties influence governance dynamics, decision-making processes, and public policy development in Cameroon.
This study aims to fill this vacuum by performing a comprehensive assessment of the influence of political parties on Cameroon's governance as discussed by Diamond (2019). The research intends to investigate how political parties affect policy-making, their role in policy development and execution, and the impact of their engagement on democratic practices and socio-political stability. Hence, the need to investigate the role of political parties in shaping Cameroon's governance.

What is the extent to which political parties in Cameroon contribute to the formulation and implementation of government policies?
What is the role of political parties in promoting democratic principles in Cameroon?
What are the challenges facing political parties in shaping Cameroon's governance?
1.5 Significance of the study
Political parties: the findings of the study will be significant to the various political parties in existence in Cameroon as it will reveal that political parties have a lot of contributions to make towards shaping governance in Cameroon.
Academia: the findings of the study will be significant to the academic community as it will contribute to the existing literature on the subject matter.
1.6 Scope of the study
The study focuses on investigating the role of political parties in shaping Cameroon's governance. Empirically, the study will examine the extent of political party involvement in the shaping Cameroon's governance, evaluate the extent to which political parties in Cameroon contribute to the formulation and implementation of government policies, investigate the role of political parties in promoting democratic principles in Cameroon and identify the challenges facing political parties in shaping Cameroon's governance.
1.7 Limitations of the study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher resorted to a moderate choice of sample size. More so, the researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.
1.8 Definition of terms
Political Parties: an organization that coordinates candidates to compete in a particular country's elections
Governance:the act or process of governing or overseeing the control and direction of something
